Applications Open: Loan Committee Volunteers

Community Futures Alberni-Clayoquot is seeking volunteers from any location within the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District to join our Loan Committee. Since 1985, Community Futures has provided business loans to entrepreneurs at all stages of their business journey. Our lending approach differs from that of traditional financial institutions in several ways:

• Loans are adjudicated locally by individuals who are passionate about strengthening the local economy—most of whom have no banking experience.
• We prioritize local economic growth over profit, considering the broader community impact and future potential.
• We offer business training alongside financing, helping businesses succeed rather than just providing loans.
• Our volunteers are committed to fostering entrepreneurship and economic development in the Alberni-Clayoquot region.

What We Look For

Community Futures strives to recruit volunteers who are engaged with, work alongside, or have an understanding of various stakeholder groups. Ideal candidates should:

  • Have an interest in advancing community economic development in the region.
  • Possess knowledge of and interest in issues affecting the Alberni-Clayoquot region.
  • Have an understanding of the local economy.
  • Own property, reside, or operate a business in the Alberni-Clayoquot region.
  • Be fluent in English.
  • Have firsthand experience as a business owner or a strong understanding of small business (an asset but not required).
  • Not be bankrupt, in the process of making a bankruptcy assignment, or entering into a proposal or arrangement with creditors.

Meetings

Loan Committee volunteers typically meet in person once a month during the lunch hour. Lunch is provided by Community Futures. Occasionally, Zoom calls or electronic polls may be used to meet service speed targets.

Benefits

  •  Training is provided for volunteers.
  • Travel reimbursement for volunteers from Bamfield, Ucluelet, or Tofino attending meetings.
  • A discount card for our social enterprise, Coombs Country Candy.
